Looking for a hands-on HR Generalist who enjoys rolling up their sleeves and making things happen?

Amref Health Africa is the largest Africa-based international health development organisation, working across 35 countries to bring lasting health change to communities across Africa. Amref Health Africa UK supports this mission through fundraising, partnerships and advocacy, helping secure the resources needed to transform health outcomes across the continent. [

We are now seeking an experienced and adaptable HR & Operations Manager to join the team on a six-month fixed-term basis to cover a sabbatical leave.

Reporting to the Head of Finance, Operations & People, this role offers the opportunity to make an immediate impact across both the people and operational functions during a critical period for the organisation.

The Opportunity

Approximately 80% of this position focuses on HR leadership, with the remaining 20% supporting operational and office management activities. You'll work closely with the CEO, Directors, managers and Board of Trustees, helping to ensure that people, systems and processes enable the organisation to achieve its strategic goals.

You'll play a key role in:

  • Leading strategic and operational recruitment activity.
  • Managing the full employee lifecycle from onboarding through to offboarding.
  • Supporting managers through complex employee relations matters, including capability procedures, long-term absence management and occupational health referrals.
  • Delivering the annual appraisal and objective-setting process, including significant administration and process management.
  • Advising on HR policies, employment law and best practice.
  • Building trusted relationships across the organisation and supporting a positive workplace culture.
  • Managing relationships with external suppliers.
  • Managing office operations, facilities and health and safety arrangements alongside workplace partners.
  • Supporting governance processes and working closely with senior leaders and trustees.

Why Join Amref UK?

This role offers a rare opportunity to step into a broad, visible and influential position within a highly respected international development organisation.

You'll join a collaborative team where flexibility, initiative and relationship-building are highly valued. The successful candidate will have genuine autonomy, exposure to senior leadership and the opportunity to support organisational priorities across people, governance and operations.

Who We're Looking For

We are seeking a confident HR professional who combines strategic thinking with a strong willingness to get involved in the detail.

You may currently be:

  • An HR Manager or Senior HR Manager within a charity, SME or purpose-led organisation.
  • A standalone HR lead responsible for the full employee lifecycle.
  • An HR Business Partner seeking broader operational responsibility.
  • An experienced interim HR professional who enjoys variety and autonomy.

You Will Bring

  • Significant generalist HR experience across the full employee lifecycle.
  • Strong knowledge of UK employment law and employee relations practice.
  • Experience supporting managers through complex sickness absence, capability and performance processes.
  • Experience managing recruitment campaigns from role design through to onboarding.
  • Confidence working with senior leaders, executives and trustees.
  • Experience running performance management and appraisal processes.
  • Strong organisational skills and attention to detail.
  • The ability to balance strategic priorities with hands-on delivery.
  • Experience managing external suppliers and stakeholder relationships.
  • Confidence engaging with technical teams and IT service providers.
  • CIPD qualification or equivalent experience.
  • A collaborative, pragmatic and solutions-focused approach.
